Make a list of some of the criteria you may have for a counselor. For example, you may feel more comfortable talking to a counselor who is the same gender as you, take into consideration any religious affiliations, ask about payment plans or what type of insurance they accept, and whether or not they can prescribe medication? These are just a few of the questions you should ask when you are narrowing down your search for a counselor.

2. Once you’ve got a list of potential therapists make an appointment to meet with them. Check to see if they offer any type of a discount rate for the first session. Once you’ve had a chance to meet with one or two counselors you should have a better time choosing the right person to help you cope with all the emotions during this difficult time.

3. When you are meeting with your counselor make sure that the two of you have a game plan in mind. While it would be impossible to say that you’ll be completely able to move on by a certain deadline, it isn’t impossible to set smaller goals such as week to week goals.

4. It’s important that you are completely honest when talking with your counselor. They can’t help you face your issues and resolve them if the counselor doesn’t even know what those issues may be.

5. It’s important that you understand that you may take one or two steps ‘backwards’ for every step you take forward. This is all part of the process, don’t get discouraged. You should be able to see an overall forward, positive progression but you will likely encounter a few detours along the way and that is perfectly normal.

Of course, it’s very important that you make sure that you want her back for the right reasons, and just so we’re clear, jealousy and ego are not the right reasons. More than likely at this point she’ll be receptive but if she says she’s not interested in anything more than a friendship you better be careful how you react. Even if she says she doesn’t want to get back together there is always the possibility she may reconsider but if you get mad and make a fool of yourself she’ll never want you back. Keep your cool.

If she just doesn’t want to get back together or see you as anything other than a friend you will have to move on and find someone else. If your marriage is in trouble, the sooner you address the issues the greater the likelihood you’ll be able to improve your relationship.
